April Submission(From question submitted by Tenyu-Bulgaria)

Hi,Jeff! I'm great fan of Meckwell. I like to play Precision club with my regular partners, and My question is:
Why U.S. topbridge players do not play weak 2 two-suiter
openings(from 2D to 2NT)? In Europe many pairs playing Precision open 1D - 1+d(not 2+)and Precision 2D(2H)-short D then is unnecessary.They play 2D(multi - weak 2M)2H/S/NT -two-suiters(5-4,5-5).

Many pairs playing multi do play 2Maj(2nt) as 2 suiters. I do not approve of having 1D opener being 1+, as causes more problems than it solves with the 2 level bids. Meckwell has played multi for a long time, we needed our 2H opening to be short D as you described. Therefore we couldn't use the 2suited bids.

I'm sure you will be interested to know that Meckwell has recently dropped multi in favor of regular weak 2 bids. We found that multi allowed the opponents to many direct and delayed actions and that weak 2's were far more effective in the long run.

(Matt's comment- I agree with jeff's comment. i have encountered a number of these different types of devices myself, and they work extremely well against weak and inexperienced competition, but oftentimes give away more information than it gains in high level competitions. In general it seems that a system should be geared twoards accuracy of one's own bidding, rather than designing it to try and cause problems for the opps, thanx for the ?)
